Forty Day Fast for Christian
Nonviolence: Adopt a day, a day of the week each week, or
longer to participate in this annual rolling fast for nonviolence
between July 1st and August 9th. Our hope is to have at least
one person fasting each of the 40 days. Sign up and invite
your community to do the same. E-mail
nypaxchristi@igc.org.
You'll receive details about the fast, its history, and opening and
closing prayers.

Hiroshima Nagasaki Memorial:
On Sunday, August 9th, the 64th anniversary of the bombing of
Nagasaki, Japan, we will gather to commemorate the tragedy of
nuclear weaponry and pray for its abolition. We'll begin at
St. Joseph's Parish House, 371 Sixth Avenue, Manhattan, in the
library at 2:45 PM. There we plan to watch a portion of
White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
and then engage in discussion facilitated by Cheryl Wertz of Peace
Action and Sr. Mary Beth Moore of Pax Christi Long Island and the
Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives. Following that, we will process
around Washington Square Park and end with a prayer in Fr. Demo
Square near St.
Joseph's. This event is free. Light refreshments will be
available.
-
Summer Picnic: Come to
Central Park, north side of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, on
Saturday, August 15th, at 1:30 PM for our annual potluck picnic.
It's a great way to be community.
-
Fall Assembly: Save
Saturday, October 24th, from 9:30 to 4:30, to join us at Fordham
University Lincoln Center Campus for a full day of prayer, community
building, thought-provoking presentations, and inspiration for
action. Our theme is "Becoming a Peace Church: The Challenges
of the Catholic-Mennonite Dialogue." Speakers will include Fr.
Drew Christiansen, Msgr. John Radano, and Dr. Nancy Heisey, who were part of the
Dialogue, and Rev. Sylvia Shirk Charles, pastor of the Manhattan
Mennonite Fellowship. Brochures to
come in late summer.
-
Retreat 2010: We'll be
returning to St. Joseph Renewal Center in Brentwood, Long Island for
our Lenten retreat in 2010 from March 6th to the 7th, with the
option for an overnight stay on March 5th. Fr. Kevin Queally,
TOR, will lead us in a theme still in development. Fr. Queally
is a long-time friend of PCMNY who facilitated our Fall Assembly on
Sts. Francis and Clare in 2005 and who recently resigned from his
position as Vice President of Mission at St. Francis University in
Loretto, PA, because the University is starting an ROTC program
contrary to the Franciscan mission of peacemaking. Whatever
the theme, you can be sure to be inspired by this man of great
principle.
We are now pleased to be
