Annual Summer Picnic:
Change of Date! Come to Central Park, north side of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, on Saturday, August 21st, at 1:30 PM for our annual
potluck picnic. It’s a great way to be community.
-
Life in the Occupied Territories:
Watch two films with us that provide an excellent, down-to-earth
introduction to the occupation of Palestine and the nonviolent
movement for freedom and equality in the Holy Land. The first is
Life in Occupied Palestine, and the second is a preview of
Palestinian filmmaker and journalist Fida Qishta’s powerful movie,
Where Should the Birds Fly? The latter gives a glimpse
into the human catastrophe visited on the people of Gaza by Israel
during last year’s Operation Cast Lead. The screening will be
followed by a Q & A with Fida Qishta; Susan Beschta, a member of
Ascension parish and CodePink; and Judy Solomon of Women in Black
and CodePink. We'll be showing these films in the "library" of
St. Joseph's Parish House, 371 Sixth Avenue, on the UN
International Day of Peace, Tuesday, September 21st. Door will
open at 6:30 PM.
-
Fall Assembly:
Water is
becoming increasingly the center of worldwide conflicts. This
year PCMNY’s Fall Assembly, Waters of War, Waters of Peace, is going to focus on this vital
resource. Marian Ronan, research professor of Catholic
Studies at New York Theological Seminary and speaker and
widely-published writer on the world water crisis (as well as a
member of our Board and Education Committee), will be our keynote
presenter.
The Assembly will take place at St. Francis College, Brooklyn from 9:30 AM
to 4:30 PM on Saturday, October 16th. The morning will
feature PCMNY's "State of the Region" report, and the afternoon
will feature our special topic. Brochures available in early
September.
-
Using
Nonviolence to Transform the World: Please join us for a
presentation on the use of nonviolence in Haiti, a shared lunch,
and an afternoon discussion of applying nonviolence to our lives
and work locally. Our featured guest is Daniel Tillias,
Program Director of Pax Christi Haiti. Our facilitator is
Dr. Anna Brown of St. Peter's College, Jersey City. This
event is co-sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of New York; Pax
Christi Metro New York; King-Kairos Community, Jersey City; New
York Catholic Worker; Kairos Community, NY; and Visitation Social
Action Committee. It will take place on Saturday, November
6th from 10 AM to 3 PM at Maryhouse Catholic Worker, 55 E. 3rd

children, will take place at St. Joseph’s Greenwich Village Church
on Tuesday, December 28th after the 5:30 PM Mass.

In Between:
Hosting a winter cultural event has become PCMNY’s latest
tradition. This coming year we will be offering In
Between, a semi-autobiographical one-man show about the
complexities and contradictions inherent in Palestinian-Israeli
identity. At the center of the story is Ibrahim Miari, son of a
Palestinian Muslim father and a Jewish Israeli mother. It will take place in St. Joseph’s
Church on Sunday afternoon, January 30th. Keep an eye out
for more details and ticket information.
-
Retreat 2011:
Yes, we’re already reserved for next year’s retreat, and we’re
very excited that our retreat leader will be the renowned author,
mystic, peacemaker, and spiritual guide, Edwina Gateley. We’ll be
at St. Joseph’s Renewal Center in Brentwood, Long Island March 4th-6th.
We are now pleased to be
able to accept credit card donations. Call us at 212-420-0250
